One win away from a third straight Olympic title.

The South Korean fencing sabre team advanced to the final of the men’s sabre team competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a 45-39 victory over France in the quarterfinals at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, on Wednesday (Aug. 31).

With the victory, South Korea is just one win away from a third consecutive men’s sabre team title, joining London 2012 and Tokyo 2020.

South Korea’s dominant performance against fencing’s reigning champions, France, left the hosts powerless in the face of the New Avengers.

South Korea was represented by Oh Sang-wook, Koo Bon-gil, and Park Sang-won. France had Patrice, Afiti, and Pienfeti.

In the first round, Park Sang-won was the first to go, but he fell 2-5 in a close match with Patrice. The match was so intense that it required several video readings, but he only managed to win two points.

Korea’s comeback began in the second round with Oh Sang-wook. He scored a whopping eight points against Pianpetti to turn the tide and take a 10-7 lead.

Park continued his good form in the fourth game. He took five points from Piangpeti to lead 20-9 and 11 points. In the fifth round, Koo Bon-gil also played a close game with Patrice, taking a 5-4 lead and leading 25-13.

Oh’s sixth round went by faster than lightning. He quickly scored five points against Apiti to take a 16-point lead, 30-14. Koo Bon-gil’s seventh game was a different story. He gave up four points in a row to Piangpeti but fought back to reach 35 points (35-20).

In the eighth round, Park struggled against Apiti. He looked shaky after conceding five points, but he quickly recovered and kept the pressure on Apiti. Then, a questionable call cost him more points and he conceded 10 points to trail 40-30.

In the ninth and final round, Korea’s Oh Sang-wook came out to play. There was a crisis when he lost three consecutive points to Patrice. He fought back, but then conceded more points and was down 41-36. It could have gone either way. But Oh Sang-wook stayed strong. He scored back-to-back points from Patrice to regain control. He scored the final five points to win the match.
