Doo Hyun-seok scores the winning goal K League 1 Gwangju beats Suwon FC for the first time in a month

Gwangju’s Doo Hyun-seok (#11 yellow jersey) celebrates after scoring a goal.

(SEOUL) By Kim Dong-chan = Professional soccer’s K League 1 Gwangju FC won for the first time in about a month by sacrificing Suwon FC.

Gwangju won 1-0 away from home against Suwon FC in the 24th round of the Hana OneQ K League 2023 at Suwon Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province on June 22.

Gwangju, which hadn’t won a league game since beating Jeonbuk Hyundai 2-0 on June 24, went winless with three draws and one loss.

With nine wins, seven draws and eight defeats, and 34 points, Gwangju’s position in the standings will be determined by the results of their subsequent matches on Sunday.

They currently sit in fifth place, but could move up to sixth depending on the outcome of Hana Citizen’s match against Daegu FC, which ends later in the day.

In a game played in the rain, Gwangju’s Doo Hyun-seok opened the scoring for Suwon FC in the 43rd minute with a right-footed mid-range shot after collecting a ball cleared by the opposing defense with his chest at the front of the penalty area.

Suwon FC was unfortunate to go behind in the 38th minute when Lopez’s mid-range shot was blocked by Gwangju goalkeeper Kim Kyung-min, and the rebounded ball found the back of the net as Oh In-pyo ran onto it.

Suwon FC’s third straight loss in league play extends its winless streak to three draws and six defeats in nine league games.

Their last win was a 2-1 victory over Suwon Samsung on June 3.

With five wins, five draws, and 14 losses, 고스톱 Suwon FC is stuck in 10th place out of 12 teams with 20 points.
