Judo’s Kim Minjong wins bout with daylight at Summer Universiade Gold

First round bye, then all bouts to final

Korean judo’s top heavyweight Kim Min-jong (Yangpyeong-guncheong) has won a gold medal at the Chengdu Summer Universiade after defeating a Japanese fighter.

According to the Korean Judo Federation (KJF) on Monday, Kim narrowly defeated Japan’s Nakamura Yuta in the men’s 100 kilograms and above final at the 2023 Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China.

Nakamura is a Japanese judo hopeful who won gold at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Junior World Championships last year.

Kim put on a dominant performance, winning every bout in the final after a first-round bye.

Kim became the second Korean judoka to win a gold medal at the event. Earlier, Heo Mi-mi (Gyeongbuk Sports Federation) won gold in the women’s 57kg category.

Han Ju-yup (Korea Horse Society) in the under-90kg category, Lee Yoon-sun (Yongin University) in the under-78kg category, 한국야동 and Park Saet-byul (Yongin University) in the over-78kg category also won silver medals.
